Disney's 'Return to Oz' Star Emma Ridley Takes On a 15th Century French Château

Emma and her husband Michael Carter are restoring Château de Labatut, a 15th century château in the Périgord Noir region of the Dordogne. The couple bought the property in 2024 and are documenting the restoration on a new YouTube channel, Château Dreams and Chaos, which is now live.
“We took this project on because we’re a little bit crazy, and because the food is better in France,” said Ridley. “I want to create a dream castle to share with everyone. Weddings, birthdays, celebrations, festivals and concerts, with a farm to table café, a British pub, an Italian spa and an equestrian centre. The possibilities are endless.”
The restoration is at an early stage, with permits still in process, and the couple are living on the estate while the work is planned. Their longer-term intention is to open the château as a venue for weddings and events, alongside equestrian and hospitality plans for the wider grounds.
Emma has been a public figure since childhood. She won a scholarship to the Royal Ballet School at six and performed on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special the same year, before appearing in a film adaptation of Jackie Collins’s The World Is Full Of Married Men and then Return to Oz.
The YouTube channel follows the project from the beginning, including the paperwork, the surprises behind the walls and the realities of bringing a building of this age back into use.
The château sits in the Périgord Noir, a region known for its medieval villages, prehistoric cave art at Lascaux and some of the highest concentrations of castles in France.
