7 Suspects Face Murder Charges of French Nationalist Activist in Lyon
Six of the suspects face charges of "intentional homicide," while a seventh — Jacques-Elie Favrot, a parliamentary aide to La France Insoumise (LFI) MP Raphael Arnault — was charged with "complicity in murder by instigation," a broadcaster reported.
The seven men, aged between 20 and 26, were formally charged Thursday in Lyon following a wave of arrests over recent days. Six were remanded into pretrial detention, while a seventh was released under judicial supervision.
Deranque died last week after sustaining severe injuries during the street confrontations. Left-wing party LFI has since faced accusations of bearing "moral responsibility" for his death.
Macron-Meloni Diplomatic Spat
The case has spilled beyond France's borders, triggering a sharp exchange between French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Meloni had described Deranque's death as a "wound to the whole of Europe" in a post on X, the US social media platform — prompting Macron, speaking to reporters during a visit to India on Thursday, to warn: "Let everyone stay at home, and the sheep will be well guarded."
Meloni pushed back swiftly in an interview

"My remarks were not about France, but about the risks of polarization in society. Interference is something else — for example, when an elected leader says, 'we will monitor another country,'" she said.
She added that she "did not expect this statement from Macron."
