France proposes NATO exercise in Greenland amid rising tensions
Greenland, a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn Trump’s attention because of its strategic location, abundant mineral resources, and concerns over growing Russian and Chinese activity.
Trump has refused to rule out using force to seize the island and circulated meme-like images to support his claims. Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
France, along with Denmark, Sweden, and Germany, is strengthening its military presence in Greenland through exercises and reconnaissance missions, while Trump continues to argue that the island should be “in the hands of the US” to counter Russian and Chinese influence.
On Saturday, Trump announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland starting Feb. 1, increasing to 25% in June, until a deal is reached for “the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”
European leaders have rejected the proposed tariffs and reiterated their solidarity with Denmark in response to Trump’s statements.
