France Still Battles Active Flames After Wildfires
In Marseille, within the Mediterranean Bouches-du-Rhone department, the blaze is showing signs of retreat, Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan told media.
Still, Payan cautioned that the fire has not been completely contained and the threat of flare-ups remains high.
So far, the Marseille Fire Brigade estimates that about 750 hectares (1,853 acres) have been consumed by the fire. Approximately 700 firefighters are currently deployed to contain the blaze.
Reports indicate around 70 homes have suffered damage, with 10 completely destroyed.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau visited the affected zone Tuesday evening.
“Several injuries have been reported among firefighters and security forces. Their battle continued throughout the night. In this context of drought, I call on everyone to act responsibly: a single careless gesture can spark a fire. Stay vigilant,” he posted on X.
In the Herault department, a separate fire that consumed roughly 400 hectares (988 acres) on Tuesday was brought under control by Wednesday morning.
Additionally, a wildfire that began Monday in the Aude department, burning 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres), has ceased to spread.
However, a blaze that broke out Tuesday in Montdardier, Gard department, remains active. It has scorched around 500 hectares (1,235 acres) of vegetation and is still not under control.
